Rio Ferdinand has urged Chelsea to strengthen defensively in the transfer window to give Frank Lampard a team that can compete for the Premier League title.
Despite having signed Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner already, the Blues continue to be linked with a host of attacking talent, such as Kai Havertz and Said Benrahma.
Ferdinand has been impressed by the business already done by Lampard but says more focus needs to be paid to Chelsea's defence.
Speaking to BT Sport, Ferdinand argued that adding attacking flair will not help them challenge for titles unless they also strengthen the defensive core of the side.
The former England defender said: "I think Frank's done his work early, that's good business.
"The players he's brought in are players that can play and know the level at Champions League football.
"I think they're an upgrade on some of the players he's got.
"Definitely adds competition, but I think now he has to look at the other end of the pitch because that's an area that when you want to win things, big trophies, which Frank will be wanting to do.
"That's the demands of that club, the foundations in the centre-half area, goalkeeper have to be strong."
The Blues appear to be heeding this advice, given continued links to Declan Rice at West Ham.
Chelsea have also been linked with a number of left-backs as Lampard looks to strengthen a position of weakness over the last 12 months.
Ben Chilwell, Sergio Reguilon and David Alaba have all been linked with moves to Stamford Bridge at some point this summer.
