Rio Ferdinand issues Manchester United transfer demand with Jadon Sancho prediction

Manchester United great Rio Ferdinand has urged his former side to invest in the transfer market this summer, while predicting that Jadon Sancho will be among the arrivals.

United 's defeat to Leicester City secured the Premier League title for Manchester City, who sit 10-points clear, and the rest of the division faces a stern test if they are to snatch the title off Pep Guardiola's side next term.

As such, Ferdinand believes investment to improve the depth of the squad is necessary - and he also believes Sancho will be plying his trade at Old Trafford next season.

“You see the team, if they change the squad, Manchester City can do this, they can do this and be comfortable. They wouldn’t look like a team that’s out of sorts and has been thrown together," he told BT Sport.

"If Man City change their team like this, they just look like the Man City that play in the Premier League with their first 11. You don’t see a change because of the quality, the depth in their squad. Man United, to get to that level, yes, Ole’s perfectly right, they have to invest in the transfer market and I imagine they will.

“I think Manchester United’s prime position, for them to become a team that can compete, is centre-back. To get a partner for Harry Maguire, and he produces every week. At the moment, I think there’s too many players, centre-forward especially, who are looking when they go in that tunnel who smell a chance.

"Ruben Dias and John Stones at the moment, in the last six months, teams are thinking it’s going to be really difficult. I don’t think they get that feeling right now when they play Manchester United."

Asked whether he believes United will land Sancho this summer, Ferdinand added: "I do, yeah, if he’s available. From what you read in the media, they probably had a deal behind closed doors that he’s got one more season there that he gives them, then he’ll be eligible to go for the right price.

"If he is available, I think Manchester United go for him. The right wing area, Mason can play there, he’s been effective there, but they want someone out-and-out, who can cross for the likes of Mason, Cavani and Rashford.

"I think those two positions, after Cavani signed, I don’t think they’ll go in the market for a number nine - right wing and centre-half.”
