Rio Ferdinand issues Manchester City warning with advice from Sir Alex Ferguson

Rio Ferdinand has warned Manchester City that they must follow Sir Alex Ferguson's advice and not peak too early in their pursuit of silverware.

Pep Guardiola 's side strolled to a 2-0 first-leg victory in their Champions League knockout tie with Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday night.

Goals from Bernardo Silva and Gabriel Jesus sealed City's 19th consecutive victory in all competitions, which has put them in a commanding position to reach the quarter-finals of Europe's elite club competition.

With Manchester City holding a 10-point lead at the top of the Premier League too, whilst still competing in both domestic cup competitions, Ferdinand has reminded City of Ferguson's mantra, 'it doesn't matter what you do in the autumn, it's what you do in the spring'.

“They don’t look like they are going to run out of gas at all," Ferdinand admitted when posed the quote by Gary Lineker.

"They’ve got such depth in their squad, it’s phenomenal, the players are all coming in and having an impact when they come in as well. No-one is sulking, the dynamics of the squad looks perfect at the moment and you just, for City’s sake, you’re going to want that to continue until the end of the season.

"You don’t want this vein of form right now and then when you get to the business end of the season and you start falling away and you see a chink in the armour.”

On their performance against Monchengladbach, he added: “Total domination tonight, in terms of the way that they approached the game, the way they carried it out, the game-plan put together and executed perfectly tonight.

"They maybe would’ve wanted one or two more goals to really finish the tie off, but they’ll be pleased with that - two away goals, clean sheet, job done.

“That’s been a real trait of this team in this run. They’ve made games where you expect it to be a little tougher and it just comes easy to them. They score at the right times and like we said before the game, they don’t look like conceding and it’s a great mix to have.”
