Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has issued fresh criticism directed towards Timo Werner following his latest poor performance.
The Germany international had shown signs of a rejuvenation in recent weeks but came under the spotlight once again after Chelsea's 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid.
Olivier Giroud's overhead kick has handed the advantage to Thomas Tuchel's side but the win could, and perhaps should, have been by a greater margin.
Werner was guilty of spurning a number of decent opportunities during the game before being hauled off in the closing stages for Christian Pulisic.
Ferdinand has now expressed his frustration with Werner's struggles in front of goal, making it clear he expects far more from Chelsea's big money signing.
"It’s just frustrating watching him because you’ve seen clips of him and you’ve seen what he can do," he said on BT Sport's coverage.
"I feel like [his first-half miss] is not an easy chance but you’d like to see him get it on target and get a better connection on the ball.
"But he just frustrates you. There are far too many times where he’s too loose in possession when building up or decision-making when he gets into [dangerous] areas.
"Sometimes fast players sometimes have to slow the game down in their mind. They’re running so fast everything else is a blur, and that’s maybe how he seems at the moment."
Werner has scored 10 goals and contributed nine assists for Chelsea in all competitions so far this season.
