Rio Ferdinand identifies the one bit of transfer business Man Utd have to complete

Rio Ferdinand has identified the one bit of transfer business Manchester United need to complete this summer - tie down David De Gea to a new deal.

The Red Devils have been linked with a number of world-class players including Kalidou Koulibaly and Philippe Coutinho ahead of the transfer window opening and could be a serious force to be reckoned with next season.

But Ferdinand thinks the most important bit of business his former club must complete is a new deal for their number one, because without him the 'foundations' won't be there.

When asked if Manchester United can afford to lose De Gea on BT Sport, Ferdinand responded: "I wouldn't say so. I think they need to get that bit of business done as soon as possible.

"The last few years he has been the best goalkeeper on the planet.

"If you're going to try and build a title-challenging team you have to get the foundations right and he is right in the mix of those foundations.

"So they need to sort that out (his contract)."

De Gea, whose is out of contract at the end of the season, has been in a stand-off with Manchester United for a few months now, but the club remain confident he will sign a new deal.

Real Madrid are reportedly keen on the Spaniard, despite having recently signed Thibaut Courtois, as the Belgian isn't favoured by Zinedine Zidane.
