Rio Ferdinand highlights difference between Liverpool loss and Man City 6-1 mauling

Rio Ferdinand has questioned whether Manchester United have lost their identity following the 5-0 home defeat to fierce rivals Liverpool.

The ex-United defender, like many United fans across the globe, was left shell-shocked after Jurgen Klopp's side ran riot at Old Trafford - with the Reds 4-0 up at the half-time stage.

Ferdinand gave his views on the contest as it was happening via Twitter, before he discussed the demolition in depth courtesy of his Vibe with Five podcast on YouTube.

Analysing one of the worst results in United's recent history with brother and fellow former professional Anton, he explained: "It was an embarrassment. I've been there, we got beat 6-1 at home by Man City.

"These are the questions, when you watch the game, you think 'what are we?'

At this point, Ferdinand turned his attention directly to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - questioning his part to play United's recent demise.

"Is the manager giving the players the right information? And if so, are the players not taking on the information?

"That's what the manager needs to get to the bottom of because at the moment it looks like a team just thrown together."

While fellow former United star Gary Neville has been reluctant to criticise Solskjaer, Ferdinand did not hold back in his damning assessment of the side's tactics.

"They look like a team you watch and think 'are they coached properly? are they taking in the information?'

"They'll be embarrassed today. Their pride. They're going to have to have big meetings, they're going to have to talk.

"It's very disappointing and not a nice place to be as a Man United fan. The best teams all had an identity and they all know who they are."

CONTE: Sir Alex Ferguson has already given Man Utd his blessing over manager decision

Following the humbling at the hands of Liverpool, United now languish as low as seventh in the table - eight points adrift of table toppers Chelsea.

As a result, Solskjaer is facing mounting scrutiny over his future at the club as a number of reports emerged on Monday evening that appeared to suggest he is staring down the barrel of dismissal.

A number of high-profile figures have been touted with the Old Trafford hot-seat should Solskjaer get sacked in the coming days.

Former Chelsea and Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte is thought to be open to the role, while ex-Real Madrid manger Zindine Zidane is reportedly not interested.
