Rio Ferdinand has transfer message for Mauricio Pochettino and Spurs ahead of January

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has urged Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino to take drastic action when the transfer window opens in January.

Spurs have struggled for form so far this season and a 1-1 draw with Everton in the Premier League on Sunday has left Pochettino's side 10 points adrift of the top-four spots already.

That has seen the pressure on the club increase significantly ahead of this weekend's hosting of a high-flying Sheffield United, who remarkably sit fifth in the table.

Ferdinand believes he has identified the root of the problem though and has urged Pochettino to oversee a vast number of changes in the New Year to rejuvenate the squad.

“I think maybe Pochettino wasn’t backed enough in terms of recruitment. It seems like a stale changing room and a stale group of players. It’s very similar to what we have seen in the last couple of years, tactically they have regressed,” he told BT Sport.

“I do believe that when players are unsettled and you hear noises in the media, you have to just get them out, get rid, because it can be cancerous. It spreads the wrong message around the squad and it doesn’t bode well for the team.

“This is an example of that. When you have unsettled players, get them out the door and bring in players who actually want to be at your football club.”
