Rio Ferdinand hammers Manchester United's Fred decision vs Man City and fans agree

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has hit out at a free-kick decision made during the Reds' Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg clash at Man City.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad took a 3-1 deficit to the Etihad Stadium but managed to pull off a win away from home thanks to Nemanja Matic's goal.

But it wasn't enough to see United make the trip to Wembley as they lost 3-2 on aggregate.

Whilst City dominated the first half and United were lucky to be in front, the hosts looked nervous late on as the Reds attempted to level the tie on aggregate.

One big moment came near the end of the contest as United won a free-kick in a promising area of the field, only for Fred to fire the opportunity into the wall.

Ferdinand was left furious by the decision to not hand Juan Mata the opportunity to potentially give United a 2-0 lead on the night.

He tweeted: "Please can someone explain to me why @juanmata8 isn’t on that free kick! #specialist."

United fans have largely reacted in unison to Ferdinand's comment by agreeing with the club legend.

Mata has at times endured a mixed spell at the Reds but was handed a new contract last summer which runs until the end of the 2020/21 season, with an option to remain for another year.

The Spaniard has featured 15 times in the Premier League this term but only seven of those have been from the start.

He is yet to score this season but has assisted two goals in the league.
