Rio Ferdinand says “it was a blessing in disguise” Manchester United defender Eric Bailly had to come off after his horror show first-half performance against Paris Saint-Germain .

Bailly started at right-back as United sought to rescue their Champions League last 16 tie against the French champions.

But after his side took the lead through Romelu Lukaku two minutes into the contest, the Ivory Coast international was at fault twice during a single phase of play that led to the PSG equaliser.

The 24-year-old initially played Kylian Mbappe onside before failing to track Juan Bernat's run into the box, with the Spaniard giving acres of space to tape home into an empty net.

PSG continued to torment the United defender who struggled badly in the unfamiliar role before he was replaced after 36 minutes by Diogo Dalot after suffering a knock.

Former Man Utd defender Ferdinand provided a brutal assessment of the first-half showing, telling BT Sports: "It would have been negligent to keep Bailly on the pitch to be honest.

"It's a blessing he got injured and had to come off."
