Rio Ferdinand explains why Manchester United's Jesse Lingard has sparked arguments among pundits

Rio Ferdinand thinks Jesse Lingard's start to life at West Ham United has been "amazing".

The Manchester United midfielder left Old Trafford on loan in January to join the east London club.

So far, Lingard has featured seven times for the Hammers in the Premier League, scoring five goals, the most recent of which came in the 3-3 draw with Arsenal.

The 28-year-old earned a call-up to Gareth Southgate's England squad due to his brilliant form as he looks to resurrect his career after a difficult period at United.

Prior to moving to West Ham, Lingard made just three appearances under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - with all of them coming in cup competitions (two in the Carabao Cup and one in the FA Cup).

It is unclear whether he will return to Manchester once his loan deal in London expires, but what is certain is that he has rediscovered his best form under David Moyes.

Speaking on his Vibe with FIVE podcast, ex-United defender Ferdinand explained how he was one of the few people who backed Lingard to return to his best after a difficult and frustrating period out of Solskjaer 's team.

"I’ve argued with pundit after pundit, on-air, and off-air. He could play in any top team because he’s an intelligent footballer. He can play off one-touch or two-touch," Ferdinand said.

"He gets judged on his antics on social media. Some people it rubs them up the wrong way, and they don’t like him because of it and a lot of the younger generation love it.

“But if you’re looking at him as just a cold footballer, anyone who knows football surely has to see the kid has a talent.

"Since he's gone in there, what he's done is amazing."
