Rio Ferdinand explains why he "feels sorry" for Jose Mourinho at Tottenham

Rio Ferdinand claims he "felt sorry" for Jose Mourinho as Tottenham crashed out of the FA Cup with defeat at Everton.

A thrilling fixture at Goodison Park ended 4-4 after 90 minutes and substitute Bernard scored the winner for the hosts in extra time.

In contrast to many of their cagey performances this season, Spurs set up to attack the game and played some fantastic football on Merseyside.

But they were undone by individual errors, with Hugo Lloris unable to keep out Dominic Calvert-Lewin's strike and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg conceding a penalty, which was converted by Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Ferdinand insists the mistakes have become far too regular an occurrence and are "killing" Mourinho's attempts to play "expansive" football.

"I have to say I actually feel sorry for him [Mourinho] in some ways," Ferdinand told BT Sport .

"Because in recent weeks he’s changed quite a few times in the way they’ve approached games.

"The West Brom game was a bit different when Harry Kane wasn’t playing, and now tonight was open and expansive.

"But each and every one of those times recently they’ve been undone by individual moments, individual errors.

"As a manager, you can prepare all you like all week for each game but these individual errors are killing him.

"In that sense I feel sorry for him because sometimes it just derails his whole plan that he’s worked on all week.

"I think it’s a quality thing, yeah. I think there’s too many players consistently making mistakes and it’s leaving them open and they’re having to chase games some of the time.

"Until they get that right and eradicate those types of mistakes they can never really consider themselves a team that’s going to challenge consistently because mistakes lead to goals, which then means you chase and leaves you open, it’s problems consistently."

Though their FA Cup campaign has come to an end, Spurs have progressed to the Carabao Cup final, where they will face holders Manchester City in April.

The north London club has also advanced to the Europa League knockout stages and will face Wolfsberg in the last 32.
