Rio Ferdinand explains his Erling Haaland Manchester United fear amid Edinson Cavani suggestion

Rio Ferdinand has explained his big fear for Manchester United regarding Erling Haaland, following Owen Hargreaves' suggestion to hand Edinson Cavani a new deal and spend the money on a striker elsewhere.

Cavani has excelled for United this season, firing a brace in the second-leg of the Europa League semi-final against Roma, and sees his current deal at Old Trafford due to expire at the end of the season.

Both Haaland and Harry Kane are on the agenda for United heading into the summer transfer window, with the former being the prime target, with a fierce battle set to occur in the market.

However, Hargreaves believes that money could be spent on signing players in three other positions as well as extending Cavani's stint at the club.

"Every fan would love to sign Harry Kane or Erling Haaland but I think that the money that it would cost, in the current climate, is not realistic," Hargreaves told BT Sport.

"Cavani is doing an unbelievable job. If you can get him to sign a new deal, there's no transfer fee there and obviously he's on big wages, but then I think you can spend.

"I think they need a right-winger, whether it's Jadon Sancho or Raphinha at Leeds, somebody like that, Declan Rice at the base of midfield, I'd love to see that, and another centre-back. I think they can spend the Haaland or Kane money on potentially three players."

However, Ferdinand argued that, while it may work in the short-term, the long-term need for a leading striker would remain present.

"The only thing I'm worried about is if you let Haaland or Kane go somewhere else, it's one season that they'll get Cavani for, so what happens the year after that if they let the other two go somewhere else?

"As much as I love Cavani, if you've got the finances to keep him there still and, like the old days, you've got two players vying for that same position who you can bring in and out. It's a squad game these days, more than ever.

"The quality and depth is huge. If you look at the teams who do well, Bayern Munich last season and Man City this season, the depth, even Chelsea, in all positions. It's a big bonus."
