Rio Ferdinand still believes Manchester United are unlikely to compete for the Champions League despite their 2-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain.
United got off to the perfect start in Group H with a late victory at the Parc des Princes last week thanks to Marcus Rashford's late winner.
United now host RB Leipzig in their second group game and another positive result would see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side make a major stride towards the knockout stages.
With last year's beaten finalists and a side that reached the semi-finals last term both in their group, United fans had felt pessimistic about their chances of qualifying, dubbing their draw 'a group of death'. And Ferdinand echoed those thoughts ahead of the group opener.
"Given the group they're in, I think they'll be happy to get out of the group, being honest," Ferdinand told BT Sport prior to kick-off in Paris.
"Leipzig are going to be a definite threat in this group, PSG are obvious. I think it's a really hard group to get out of.
"Getting through the group stages is fine but I think it's more about the bigger picture, improving as a squad, building as a team, the confidence throughout the squad.
"Finding some sort of identity so that you look at this team, you see it on the teamsheet, you watch it and you know what you're going to get, consistency week in, week out. That's what they'll be striving for."
Ferdinand has since been asked about both Manchester clubs' chances of winning the competition on but he remained consistent despite United's impressive win over PSG.
"I don't think so. I don't think you [Gary Lineker] are right there," he added.
"I want to see exciting football and when City are flying they are exciting to watch. Whether they are going to have enough to get over the line with the quality and consistency of Bayern Munich and Liverpool I still feel are a stronger outfit, I probably put City around the third or fourth choice for me.
"I don't think Manchester United are one of the teams we could put as favourites. I think they will do well to get out of the group. Consistency is the key for United and improving."
