Rio Ferdinand disagrees with Joe Cole about Chelsea and Man City ahead of Champions League final

Joe Cole and Rio Ferdinand are in disagreement over one particular aspect of Chelsea's Champions League final with Manchester City.

The two sides go head-to-head in Porto this evening with City looking for their first Champions League title, while the Blues are looking for their second.

Chelsea won their first title in this competition in 2012, beating Bayern Munich to become the first London club to achieve the feat, and former Blue Joe Cole believes that might help Thomas Tuchel's men when it comes to pressure this evening.

“What it was with Roman [Abramovich] when he came in, he didn’t make no qualms about this being the one he wanted," he told BT Sport.

"As players, we were winning trophies but we always knew this was the one he wanted, so going to Moscow in his hometown, playing against Manchester United, the pressure was building.

"I feel like Manchester City might feel that today because it’s actually a longer period of time since the owners came in. For Chelsea to have won it and already have it in the bag, it’s part of the history now.”

Fellow pundit Ferdinand disagreed, responding: “I don’t know. If there were players in the Chelsea team that have actually won it, then yeah, I get that.

"But for these Chelsea players - it’s their first time as well, they’re going to want it on their CV as well.”

For Manchester City, this is the club's first Champions League final, with the Cityzens reaching the semi-finals in 2015/16, but falling at the quarter-final stage in each of the last three seasons under Guardiola in 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2019/20.

Chelsea defeated Real Madrid in the semi-finals to earn their place in the final, while City beat French side Paris Saint-Germain.
