Rio Ferdinand delivers verdict on 'problem' Alexander Isak amid Arsenal transfer rumours

Rio Ferdinand has heaped praise on reported Arsenal target Alexander Isak following his impressive display for Sweden in their goalless draw with Spain on Monday night.

Janne Andersson's side were on the back foot for the majority of the Group E clash with the Euro 2008 champions, but Isak certainly caught the eye despite having limited service in the match.

The performance from the 21-year-old may have excited Arsenal supporters given the recent transfer links to the Real Sociedad striker.

The Athletic reported recently that the Gunners were eyeing the Sweden forward as a potential target this summer as Mikel Arteta looks to bolster his attacking options.

Isak came into the Euros fresh off the back of a tremendous personal season with Sociedad, where he netted 17 goals in 34 La Liga appearances, which helped him win the Young Player of the Year in the Spanish top-flight.

Now, Ferdinand has been speaking about the reported Arsenal target and was full of praise for his display against Spain.

"This kid, Isak, he was a problem today for the defenders in the Spain team," the former Manchester United centre-back said on BBC's coverage of the draw.

"He was a nuisance. He showed today why he's got Young Player of the Year in La Liga. He was the outlet.

"We were surprised, really, when he got brought off - he must be thinking about the coming games or something like that."

Arsenal have been linked with bringing a new striker to the Emirates Stadium with two of their centre-forwards' futures uncertain this summer.

Alexandre Lacazette sees his contract in north London come to an end this time next year, with the Frenchman rumoured to be potentially leaving the Gunners in the coming months.

Likewise, Eddie Nketiah's current deal is due to come to an end in June 2022 - with the England Under-21 forward also linked with a departure.

football.london understands that Arsenal are set for a massive squad overhaul this summer after a highly disappointing 2020/21 campaign, which saw Arteta's side fail to qualify for European football this season.

Edu is expected to be a busy man before the beginning of 2021/22, with at least five new players in five different positions expected to arrive in north London.
