Rio Ferdinand defends Mohamed Salah over lack of "respect" for Liverpool star

Rio Ferdinand has launched a stern defence of Mohamed Salah insisting the Liverpool star does not get the respect he deserves.

The Egyptian is again in the race to win the Golden Boot after scoring 22 times for the Reds this term.

Despite his prolific record at Anfield though Salah has regularly come in for criticism and continues to divide opinion.

The 28-year-old has faced accusations of greediness and diving whilst some claim he is also not clinical enough in front of goal.

Ferdinand took issue with the fact Salah has been snubbed in team of the year selections as he set off on a rant about the lack of plaudits handed to the forward.

"He’s vying for top goalscorer again in this league and he’s not in people’s team of the season, I do not get it," Ferdinand said on Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE.

"He ain’t getting the respect he deserves.

"Mohamed Salah is a top, top, top, top player who is churning out numbers year in, year out.

"It’s become the norm to see him at the top of the charts now. It’s out of order!"

Since arriving from Roma in 2017 Salah has scored 125 times in 201 outings for Liverpool.

That includes a single-season haul of 32, which he registered in his first year to set a Premier League record.

Salah has won domestic and European honours during his time on Merseyside and was also named the PFA Player of the Year in 2018.

Despite that he has been linked with a move away from Liverpool and talked up the possibility of a switch to Spain in the future.

His close friend and former team-mate Dejan Lovren has seemed to suggest that an Anfield exit is certainly not off the cards.

"You never know what can happen in football," he said.

"I wish him all the best, I hope he wins lots of trophies at Liverpool but football can be quite changeable so let's see.
