Rio Ferdinand criticises Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson

Rio Ferdinand criticised Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson following Arsenal's FA Cup victory against Sheffield United.

The stopper, on loan with the Yorkshire side, conceded a late goal as the Gunners set up a semi-final tie with Manchester City, with Dani Ceballos scoring in additional time.

That goal came shortly after the Blades had equalised and continues a poor run of form for Chris Wilder's side since returning from the three-month hiatus to the season.

Ferdinand, who was on punditry duty for the match, spoke of his disappointment after the game as he felt Henderson could have done better to deal with Ceballos' attempt as he was beaten at his near post from a tight angle.

"I spoke about this a while ago, as a defender I would be very upset with the keeper there," Ferdinand told BT Sport. "I'm saying to the keeper, 'the front post, nothing goes through the front post'.

"The goalkeepers' union might suggest something different but when I was playing that was how I used to feel."

David de Gea's recent blunder against Tottenham led to calls from some for Henderson to replace the Spaniard as United's number one next season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last week reiterated his belief that Henderson will become the first-choice goalkeeper for United and England in the future.

"It's a different job to be playing for Sheffield United and for Man United, there are different, how do you say, he's got different roles and for me the two years he's had have been fantastic development," Solskjaer said.

"He's had to play with men, he's had to play against men, he's played in the Championship, and plays in a team that play fantastic football and exciting football.

"And as the stats show he's proved worthy of quite a few points. He's learning all the time, he's a passionate keeper that wants to be the best, he's developing, he's got good coaching there and, I've said it before, one day he'll be England No.1 and Man United No.1 and it's up to him to keep developing."
