Rio Ferdinand credits "undervalued" Alisson as huge factor in Liverpool success

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand thinks Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson should be receiving more credit for his performances during the Reds' sensational campaign.

Liverpool have conceded just 15 goals all season in the Premier League, and they have also kept 11 clean sheets, the most in the division.

While defenders such as Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson have been rightly lauded for their displays, Alisson has sometimes gone under the radar, and Ferdinand is of the belief his impressive showings should be more widely acknowledged.

Speaking at BT's launch of its new, five-year 4-3-3 partnership with the English, Scottish, Irish and Welsh FAs, Ferdinand said: "But going back to Liverpool, I don't think it's just about him (van Dijk) and his signing. I think Alisson is a huge part, I think he's very much been undervalued, his part in this.

"You look at Liverpool when they tried to win the league and they went close and in the Champions League final- goalkeeping mistakes were a big issue for them. He's put that to bed, he's silenced that and that's a huge factor."

Alisson first signed from Roma in 2018 and has been an ever-present ever since, although he missed a chunk of this season after getting injured on the opening day of the Premier League campaign against Norwich.

Liverpool are reportedly keen to lock the 27-year-old down on a new, lucrative long-term contract, with the Brazilian establishing himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world during his time at Anfield.

Alisson helped his side to yet another clean sheet in Liverpool's 4-0 victory over Southampton at the weekend, and he will be hoping to continue his fine form going into the latter stages of the season, with a Champions League last-sixteen tie against Atletico Madrid looming on the horizon.
