Rio Ferdinand compares Harry Kane and Erling Haaland as potential Man City transfer targets

Rio Ferdinand believes Erling Haaland would be a better signing for Manchester City than Harry Kane due to the two players' differing ages.

With Sergio Aguero out contract in the summer, Manchester City have been linked with a move for Haaland as a replacement.

Haaland has scored 47 goals in 48 games since moving to Borussia Dortmund 18 months ago, whilst Kane remains one of the Premier League's best goal-scorers, with a growing influence in respect to assists.

Discussing different options available to Manchester City this summer, Ferdinand claimed Kane would be a less viable option for the club due to his age.

"It's difficult, a season or two ago I think Harry Kane would've been their first-choice," Ferdinand told BT Sport.

"He can play that number 10, he can come deep, be part of the midfield and create extra numbers in there.

"I think because of the age could be a concern and the price tag. When you have people like Haaland, it's a different proposition in terms of longevity, a player you can build around for a number of years."

On the other side of the city, MEN Sport understands that Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and football director John Murtough mutually agree that Haaland is their first-choice transfer target.

Ferdinand urged his old club to ensure they get a transfer arranged, insisting United can't afford to miss out on his signature.

“You know what, they’ve just got to go and give everything to get Haaland, I don’t care,” he said on his Vibe with FIVE YouTube show.

“I don’t like to talk about players coming from other teams but this guy man, we can’t afford to let this guy go anywhere else.

“His only destination is England, that’s the only place he’s going. If he goes anywhere else I’d be so surprised.

“Born here, born and bred. He obviously loves English football, his dad played here. I’m sure it’s one of his dreams to come and play in England.

“Why not in the red shirt at Old Trafford? Be the guy that brings trophies back to Man Utd and brings the successful period back. Be that guy.”
