Rio Ferdinand blasts VAR after Danny Rose penalty decision in Spurs v Man City

Rio Ferdinand has been outspoken in his criticism of VAR during the Champions League this season.

And he again slammed the system after Manchester City were awarded a controversial penalty in their 1-0 defeat against Tottenham .

Danny Rose was judged to have handled the ball after a Raheem Sterling shot struck his arm from close range.

Sergio Aguero's subsequent spot-kick was saved by Hugo Lloris before Son Heung-min struck a late winner for the home side.

But Ferdinand blasted the decision makers and claimed they "do not understand football" after the latest controversial penalty given for handball after VAR interference.

"You need people in that box who have played the game,” he said on BT Sport.

"These people do not understand football.

“You need to have the people that understand football if they’re making these decisions.

“That is clear cut to me, it’s not a penalty.”

Ferdinand has been left frustrated by several handball decisions in the Champions League this season, like many fans.

City were penalised against Schalke in controversial fashion in the first leg of their last-16 tie whilst Manchester United were handed the chance to snatch victory over Paris Saint-Germain after receiving a penalty for handball.

The latest decision against Rose came after City players had not initially appealed for a penalty by replays were quickly checked before the referee went to the pitchside monitor to make his decision.

Aguero's miss from the spot after an excellent Lloris save proved costly as Pep Guardiola's side fell to a narrow defeat against Spurs.
