Rio Ferdinand blames viral Premier League title celebrations for Liverpool results

Rio Ferdinand feels there has been a slight drop in Liverpool’s performances since winning the Premier League title.

The Reds were confirmed as champions last month following Manchester City’s defeat at Chelsea, ending their 30-year wait for a league title.

Since then, Jurgen Klopp’s men have played four games, including the heavy 4-0 defeat to City in their first game as champions.

Wins over Aston Villa and Brighton got them back on track, but they then dropped their first points at Anfield this season after being held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley earlier today.

And Ferdinand believes that, with the title wrapped up, a drop-off in performances is inevitable, having experienced similar situations himself during his time as a player at Manchester United.

The former defender won six league titles during his time at Old Trafford, and isn’t surprised to see Liverpool dropping points now that they’ve been confirmed as champions.

“Listen, definite celebrations,” Ferdinand told BT Sport. “We saw the pictures all over social media from the night that they won the Premier League.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that there is a one or two percent fall-off when you win the league because, unless you’ve got the Champions League coming up after, which they haven’t, you normally just sit there and chill.

“I remember running past Wayne Rooney in a game once and he told me I stunk of alcohol, I said, ‘Yeah, I’ve been out all week!’.”
