Rio Ferdinand banned from driving after speeding at 85mph in his Mercedes

Rio Ferdinand has been banned from driving for six months after he was caught speeding.

The former Manchester United player was clocked doing 85 miles per hour in a Mercedes on the A27 on the south coast near Hove in July last year.

After admitting the charge, he was disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for six months and ordered to pay a total of £822 in fines and costs at Crawley Magistrates’ Court this morning.

It's the second driving ban the father-of-three has been handed.

Back in 2012, the 41-year-old was caught speeding in his luxury Jaguar on the same Manchester road three times in five weeks.

He was fined and handed a six-month ban on that occasion, despite his lawyer, Nick 'Mr Loophole' Freeman, arguing he should get a shorter discretionary suspension.

Ferdinand and his wife TV star Kate Wright were the focus of a BBC documentary, Rio And Kate: Becoming A Stepfamily, which aired earlier this year.

It explored the challenges Wright dealt with in being both a partner to Ferdinand and a new stepmother to three grieving children.

The couple are expecting their first child together.
