Rio Ferdinand has risked the wrath of the West Ham fan base following a tweet linking Declan Rice with a move to Manchester United.
Ferdinand, a former West Ham and Manchester United player, was taking part in a question and answer session on his Twitter page when his simple tweet caused a lot of anger from Hammers supporters.
The former England captain replied to a question asking him "What number six should [Manchester] United buy this summer?"
Ferdinand replied with: "Welcome Declan Rice," tagging the Hammers vice-captain in the tweet.
West Ham fans were quick to let Ferdinand know their opinion of his reply reminding him that as a former Hammer maybe he should not be so keen to move on their star player.
Rice has long been linked with a transfer away from the London Stadium with Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United all reportedly interested in the 22-year-old.
Not that the Hammers have any intention of selling their vice-captain. David Moyes has reiterated his stance time and again that Rice is not for sale even for £100 million, claiming it would take 'Bank of England money' for him to even look at an offer.
Amid the transfer speculation surrounding Rice and his England teammate Harry Kane, Ferdinand spoke about the tapping up that goes on between players during international camps.
"Yeah that happens," Ferdinand told the Mirror when asked if players are likely to talk about transfers.
"That happened when I went to the World Cup with Nicky Butt, Becks [David Beckham] in the [Manchester] United team. Talked about me coming to United. That was speculation in the paper.
"That happens, every tournament, every get together. Players talking to players. I’m sure managers have said ‘speak to him for me and find out what he’s like’.
"Butt just said to me ‘would you come United?’. And I said ‘yeah I would. I want to win trophies’.
"That probably filtered back to the manager, they know if they want to make a bid or not. That’s how it works."
With Rice currently surrounded by international teammates from Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City if Ferdinand is correct then he will be batting away plenty of approaches as Euro 2020 continues.
