Rio Ferdinand and the England Euro 2020 win prediction that came back to bite as pundit reminded of 'we'll do them' Italy shout

Former England defender Rio Ferdinand has been reminded of his bold prediction after Italy were crowned European champions.

Roberto Mancini's side triumphed on penalties at Wembley to win Euro 2020, with Bukayo Saka of Arsenal missing the crucial spot kick.

Luke Shaw had given the Three Lions an early lead but Italy dominated after the opening exchanges, enjoying 61 per cent of possession while the England goal remained their only shot on target across the 120 minutes.

And fans were quick to remind Ferdinand of his prediction that the hosts would "do" the four-time world champions.

Following the Azzurri 's semi-final win over Spain on penalties, host Gary Lineker asked which team England or Denmark, who were playing the following night, would rather face in the final.

And the former Manchester United defender was bullish in his prediction about the game.

Ferdinand said: "England, from their perspective, and I've been up here how many times now showing the confidence? It doesn't matter who goes through here if you're England.

"I believe England beat both of these sides. I just feel no-one can compete with us right now, the confidence we've got.

"People might say I'm getting carried away, I don't care.

"What I've seen I feel England are the better team and the best team, and they beat both of these teams. But we've got to get through Denmark first."

Fellow pundit Alan Shearer then praised the mentality and togetherness of the Italian team, as well as their long unbeaten run.

However, Ferdinand wasn't having any of it.

He interjected: "We still do 'em."

Clips of the exchange went viral on social media following England's defeat, with Ferdinand previously coming under fire for his comments about Scotland.

Ahead of England's match against Steve Clarke's men at Wembley he declared he'd "never been this confident" of a win in an international tournament, only for the visitors to hold Gareth Southgate's side to a 0-0 draw.
