Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes agree on Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes issue

Manchester United greats Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes both believe that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have become over-reliant on Bruno Fernandes.

The Portugal international has been a revelation for United and made an impact off the bench at the weekend, as United came from behind to beat West Ham.

However, he couldn't inspire a fightback against RB Leipzig on Tuesday night despite scoring from the penalty spot in the closing stages.

Speaking prior to kick-off, Scholes praised Fernandes but expressed his concerns at how United have become too dependent on him.

“He’s a top-class player, isn’t he?" Scholes said. "They took their time getting him, didn’t they? I think they were linked with him for a couple of years, but they finally took the gamble to take him and they’ve been rewarded with it.

"He’s been brilliant, look at his numbers, his goals, his assists. Before he came, United couldn’t create a chance; under Mourinho, and Ole’s first little bit, but since he’s been in the team - he makes them tick.

"Sometimes it only takes one player to do that. Look at the weekend, he didn’t start at the weekend, but he came on - and they probably wanted to rest him for tonight - but they couldn’t afford to because he totally transforms the team.”

Ferdinand said: “Like Scholesy just said there, he came on the pitch [against West Ham] and totally transformed the game. What we saw before, there were too many touches. Pogba’s on the ball, when Bruno’s on the ball, he looks up and makes the pass.

"This is the worst-case scenario for United when Bruno’s not on the pitch. They can’t break teams down like this."
