Former Manchester United stars Rio Ferdinand and Owen Hargreaves believe the club have to overhaul the squad somewhat during the summer transfer window.
The Red Devils are still battling for the Premier League top four and are in the quarter-finals of the Champions League but must recruit to compete for more silverware next season.
Those are the views of Ferdinand and Hargreaves, who were speaking to BT Sport ahead of Manchester United's first-leg clash against Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the Champions League .
Hargreaves, for one, feels that his old side are short in the midfield and require a 'world class' centre-back.
"If you look at the team today, I love Scott McTominay but you look in midfield against Barca, they’re a bit short," Hargreaves told BT Sport.

"Centre-midfield, I think they need two players, a world-class centre-back and I think they need a world-class winger. If they had those four - I know it’s a big ask and probably a lot of money - but that gets you to maybe bridge the gap to Liverpool and Man City. Recruitment wise, they have been exceptional."

Ferdinand echoed Hargreaves' thoughts by adding: "They are short. One thing I will say is Ole’s come in and one of his first decisions was to push Marouane Fellaini out of the club.
"That’s a ruthless streak and we’ve talked about that. He’s calculated, he’s cold and he’s had enough time (to evaluate his squad). He’ll be judged this summer and probably the window after that. Then he’ll see his team starting to flourish, I hope."
