Rio Ferdinand and Joe Hart both agreed that Moussa Dembele's first goal against Manchester City should have been ruled out by VAR for a foul on Aymeric Laporte.
Pep Guardiola's side crashed out of the Champions League in dramatic fashion on Saturday night after a 3-1 reverse in the quarter-final.
Having equalised through Kevin de Bruyne, the game swung when Dembele put Lyon back in front, despite City defenders protesting that the goal should have been disallowed.
The ball was played through for Karl Toko Ekambi, who was offside, but he stepped over the ball to allow Dembele to run onto it, before slotting past Ederson.
VAR ruled that the goal was not offside, despite City appeals, and instead checked for a foul on Laporte by Dembele, which directly lead to the former Celtic and Fulham striker scoring.
However, the technology viewed there was no foul and Lyon were back ahead with 10 minutes left to play.
However, both Ferdinand and Hart believe there was clear contact on Laporte, albeit unintentional, and the goal shouldn't have stood.
"I think it's a foul," Ferdinand told BT Sport.
"If I'm on that pitch, it's got to be. He's connected and he's the one who went on to score. City were dominating at that time.
"There is 100 per cent contact. I don't understand how they can't call that? People will be saying conspiracy theories now if you're a City fan.
"I believe that's a foul and it's the man who goes on to score the goal."
"It's not intentional, that's clear but there is a clash of legs," Hart added.
"Does it then go with the referee's decision because he's seen it?"
