Rio Ferdinand and Jamie Carragher clash over Manchester United league title claim

Former Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand has clashed with former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher about their playing careers, amid United's ongoing difficulties when it comes to challenging for Premier League titles.

Carragher clashed with former United captain Roy Keane on Sunday on Sky Sports, with the pair of them getting into a heated row about Cristiano Ronaldo and his return to Old Trafford during the summer transfer window.

The argument extended from Keane disagreeing with caretaker manager Michael Carrick's decision to drop the Portuguese to the bench for the 1-1 draw with Chelsea. Carragher, opposing Keane's views, felt Carrick had done nothing wrong leave the former Real Madrid man amongst the substitutes.

The argument then extended into a feud about United's title prospects and if Ronaldo had come back to win them, with Carragher insisting there was no point in the 36-year-old returning to the club if United had no plans to compete for the title this season.

However, following the debate between Carragher and Keane, former United centre-back Ferdinand has now bit back at Carragher, suggesting that the former Liverpool man is no position to discuss winning league titles, given the fact that he never won during his career at Anfield.

"Carragher shouldn't really be talking about winning leagues, he's never done it, he doesn't know what it means," Ferdinand told Five. "He doesn't know how to do it.

"He's never navigated a team through it to that point to win a league. So I find it very difficult when he speaks with such conviction about winning leagues.

"You should stick to cup competitions. The moment he talks about leagues I just mute it."

Following Ferdinand's Twitter post with a link to the video he was speaking in, Carragher responded, hitting back at his former England team-mate.

Carragher suggested that Ferdinand was in no place to talk about him the way he had, saying that once the trophies had dried up at Old Trafford he wanted a move to Chelsea.

Carragher replied: "Not talking titles but the deal for Ronaldo to Man Utd which you arranged. No Premier League (title) for me but Sky like my opinions!

"No [trophy] your career without AF [Sir Alex Ferguson] and when you stopped winning PL at Man United you tried to move to Chelsea so please stop giving it the big Man United fan one!"
