Rio Ferdinand alleges he received racist abuse from Wolves fan during Manchester United match

Rio Ferdinand has accused a Wolves fan of racial abuse after alleging the supporter made monkey gestures in his direction during their match against Manchester United.

Fans were welcomed back into Molineux for the first time this season for the visit of Manchester United and the players were welcomed out to a chorus of cheers.

Wolves fans were in attendance to say farewell to their manager Nuno Espirito Santo, however, instead, one individual allegedly directed abuse at Ferdinand.

The former United defender was in attendance working as a pundit for BT Sport and claimed that he was racially targeted on Twitter in an emotional tweet.

"The last couple weeks, it’s been unreal to see fans back," he wrote.

"However To the Wolves fan who has just been thrown out for doing a monkey chant at me.

"You need to be dismissed from football & educated. Come meet me & I will help you understand what it feels like to be racially abused!"

Manchester United players have suffered racial abuse this season, with Axel Tuanzebe and Marcus Rashford amongst those to highlight the vile comments they've received online.

Fred received racist abuse on Instagram following the 4-2 loss to Liverpool at Old Trafford on Thursday.

After the game he was sent the abuse via the comment section of an image he posted on Instagram on Sunday, celebrating United's away win at Villa Park.
