Rio Ferdinand agrees with Bruno Fernandes about Chelsea's Mason Mount after Champions League win

Two years ago, Mason Mount was forced to experience one of the most painful feelings a footballer can ever imagine; losing a Championship Play-Off final at Wembley.

Fast forward the clock by 24 months, Mount now finds himself a UEFA Champions League winner.

The journey the England international has been on in such a short amount of time is nothing short of remarkable, highlighting just how much potential and quality he has within his locker.

Although Kai Havertz will go down in Chelsea folklore as the man that scored the goal to secure the club their first trophy of the Thomas Tuchel era, it would not have been possible had it not been for the vision of Mount.

The former Derby County loanee played a perfectly-weighted through ball for Havertz to latch onto, knock it past Ederson in the City goal and then into the back of the net.

In the cauldron of heat and pressure, Havertz remained calm and composed before wheeling away to celebrate.

But it was Mount's pass that made the goal. His quick-thinking to spot Havertz's run. He claimed the assist for the moment that secured Chelsea the status of European Champions for the second time in their history.

Ahead of kick-off at the Estadio do Dragao, Mount was hailed by former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand for the way he has played this season and been such an integral part of the success the Blues have experienced under Thomas Tuchel.

Ferdinand, also praising the season Manchester City youngster Phil Foden has enjoyed, told BT Sport: "This is the biggest club game in Europe and we’re here talking about two young, homegrown talents, never been seen before that, never been done.

"It’s testament to these two boys, the way they’ve come in this season and really took the Premier League by storm.

"Every time I’ve seen Chelsea, Mason Mount has been one of the top two or three best players in that team."

Ahead of the latter stages of the Premier League campaign, Mount was also heavily praised by Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes.

The Portugal attacking-midfielder, who has proven to be one of the best players in the Premier League this term, was asked who he thought had been amongst the best players in the league this season and he opted to include Mount in his selections.

Fernandes explained: "For example, I really like Mason Mount – he’s been consistent from the beginning of the season but, if people will watch numbers he’s not had so many goals as other players or assists as other players but, for me, as performances he’s been really, really top."

In total this season, Mount, who will be hoping to be named in Gareth Southgate's final 26-man squad for the Euros later today, racked up 54 appearances for the Blues, scoring nine goals and grabbing nine assists.
