Rio Ferdinand agrees with Ben Chilwell over Edouard Mendy's role at Chelsea

Edouard Mendy has been praised for his latest impressive performance for Chelsea.

The 29-year-old was drafted in as the Blues' new number one ahead of this season amid Kepa Arrizabalaga's disappointing form, joining on a deal worth around £21.6million from Rennes.

Mendy was brought in to re-establish confidence in the goalkeeper position, and he has done just that, impressing again on Saturday in a goalless draw with Leeds United.

The Senegal international made a number of smart saves to preserve Chelsea's clean sheet in an open game at Elland Road, despite the lack of goals, the Blues extending their unbeaten run to 12 with the draw.

And on the back of that, former Manchester United defender turned BT Sport defender Ferdinand praised Mendy, saying: "I can talk about it (Mendy’s impact) from a defender’s perspective, confidence just flies throughout the team.

“When you look back behind you and think if I make a mistake there’s still one person behind me who I can lean on to make a save and pull me out a bad situation and he does that.

“I think he’s got a real commanding presence. With his feet I think he’ll improve, he needs to.

“But everything else in terms of a goalkeeper the most important thing is saving the ball, I think he’s very sound.”

It's not just Ferdinand who is a fan of Mendy's, either, with teammate Ben Chilwell also praising the stopper.

"We know that when it comes down to it we can rely on Edou," Chilwell said after the draw with Leeds United.

"Those one or two opportunities in a game when he has to concentrate and make a vital save, we know he is going to do that for us."
