Rio Ferdinand admits Eden Hazard fears after Real Madrid defeat to PSG

Rio Ferdinand reckons Eden Hazard might have joined Real Madrid 'at the wrong time'.

Hazard made his first start for new club Madrid on Wednesday - but it was far from a happy occasion for the former Chelsea man as Real were in their Champions League opener.

The £90million signing was not able to impose himself on the game, as Zinedine Zidane's Real side felt the loss of defender Sergio Ramos and midfielder Luka Modric.

And former Manchester United defender Ferdinand reckons Hazard could have mistimed what appeared to be a dream move to the La Liga giants, with an ageing Real squad enduring a difficult start to the season.

Ferdinand, speaking as a pundit for BT Sport , said of Hazard: "When you go to a new club, especially the size of Real Madrid , you've got to earn the right to be the man who gets all the ball - the talisman who you look to first.

"He's got to do something in the training games, in the actual games he plays, so that people go 'we need to give him the ball'.

"But I'm fearful for him that he's gone there at the wrong time.

"This is a team that's ageing, this is a team that's not on their way up, they've not got much spark about them at the moment, and that's going to affect him, and it's going to reflect badly on him maybe in the long term."

Ferdinand's fellow pundit Peter Crouch said: "Watching him at Chelsea he was one of the top five players in the world.

"At Chelsea he was the main man and everyone's giving him the ball from everywhere, but he won't get that in Madrid until he earns it really."
