Rio Ferdinand accuses Gary Lineker of 'showing off' in Pep Guardiola interview

Rio Ferdinand jokingly accused Gary Lineker of "showing off" during his latest post-match interview with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

Lineker was speaking to Guardiola from the BT Sport studio following City's victory over Borussia Monchengladbach in the last 16 of the Champions League.

City beat their German opponents 2-0 on the night to complete a 4-0 aggregate win and booked a place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan got the goals early on in the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary, where the tie was being played due to travel restrictions as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Lineker took the opportunity to speak a few words to Guardiola in his native Spanish at the end of his interview.

The former England striker, who had a spell playing in Spain for Barcelona, thanked him for the chat and wished him good luck - or "buena suerte".

Ferdinand was clearly not particularly impressed and interrupted the bilingual Lineker as he returned to address his studio guests, saying: "Showing off there, weren't you, with the language?"

Lineker replied somewhat sheepishly: "A little bit..."

Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand continued sarcastically: "Did you play in Spain or something?"

Lineker, 60, responded: "I might have done. A long time ago, before you were born probably!"

As for the interview itself, Guardiola reflected on the game by saying: "Sometimes (it) looks very easy after. Good performance, under control 90 minutes from the beginning. We arrive here with a good result, 0-2, we cannot deny it. But this competition is tricky. Was serious, after the two goals everything was easier. The play was really good.

"I'm delighted to be in the next stage. We concede just one goal against Porto (in the competition so far), that's quite impressive."
