Rio and Kate Ferdinand viewers sob as she comforts stepdaughter at her mum’s grave

It was a tough watch for viewers of Rio and Kate Ferdinand’s documentary on Monday night.

Just minutes into the hour-long film, Kate could be seen comforting her stepdaughter at her mother’s graveside.

The blended family can be seen walking over to Rebecca Ellison’s place of rest as Tia, eight, sobs and cuddles Kate.

Rebecca, 34, tragically lost her life to breast cancer in 2015.

Rio’s mum Janice St Fort died aged 58 two years later after losing her battle with cancer, and is buried at the same place.

“It’s ok,” said Kate, comforting the youngster. “It’s ok darling. Are you ok?”

Tia said she misses her mum and her grandmother.

Kate continued: “Mummy and nanny? They want you to be happy though don’t they?

“They’re always with you, they just can’t be with you in person.

“They love you and they want you to be happy.”

Kate, 28, started dating Rio in 2017 before getting married in September 2019, becoming a stepmum to his three children, Lorenz, 12, Tate, 10, and Tia.

The BBC documentary, Rio and Kate: Becoming A Step Family, followed how the former TOWIE star slotted into their lives.

Viewers were in pieces as they watched Kate’s compassionate response.

One tweeted: “Thanks so much Rio for sharing this story! Literally had me in tears from the start. You have brought up your inspiring kids and for all you have been through it must of been so tough! I have gained so much respect for you after watching it! Tell Kate she is an amazing mum.”

A second said: “What a fantastic documentary last night we were in tears watching it. We have 3 children of our own and to watch you on your loving journey broke our hearts.

“You have a lovely family unit embracing them all with love never forget your loved one's you have lost.”

A third posted: “Ok so I’m watching Rio and Kate: Becoming a Stepfamily. Can we all just appreciate what a woman Kate is. @rioferdy5 is a lucky man, she’s just amazing.”

Another simply said: “Rio and Kate this program made me so emotional!!!”

“Rio and Kate’s becoming a step family has got me in tears,” agreed another.
