Rio 2016: Adam Peaty fills himself on free McDonald's in Olympic village after gold and silver heroics for Team GB

Record-breaking Adam Peaty has revealed how he gorged himself on free MacDonald’s since claiming Britain’s first gold medal in men’s Olympic swimming for 28 years.

The 21-year-old smashed the 100m world-record and later added a silver to his collection in the 4x100m relay in Rio but has been able to enjoy himself since, taking advantage of the free food in the Olympic village.

“April to now I’ve had no bad food and no partying,” said Peaty. “I’ve been on McDonald’s for the last seven days because it was free in the village!”

It has been suggested that Peaty could be in line for a knighthood despite his tender age and the Uttoxeter-born swimmer says it would be a privilege to be honoured for his services to British sport.

“That is something I have always looked up to,” he added. “I don’t think I deserve it just yet. There are people on that team that deserve it a lot more than me, but that is one thing I have always wanted as a kid.

“Even a Member of the British Empire sounds pretty cool. I’m hugely patriotic. I love the Royal Family, and every aspect of Britain and what we have achieved in history. That such a small country can pack a big punch and that is what we have proven now.”

Meanwhile Mark England, Team GB’s chef de mission, has lauded the bigger names in the team for helping propel the United Kingdom into a new era of prosperity this summer.

England said: “Andy [Murray] was flag bearer and he spoke really eloquently about being part of Team GB and the importance of everybody doing what they could to replicate London.

“And Justin [Rose], he’s been absolutely outstanding not only in the GB Olympic team but golf in the Olympics as well.”
