Rino Gattuso up for Rangers return as World Cup winner open to succeeding Steven Gerrard

World Cup winner Rino Gattuso would strongly consider a Rangers return as Steven Gerrard’s successor if offered the position.

The Italian is one of the candidates who has been linked with the vacant post.

And sources close to the former Ibrox midfield warrior have told Record Sport he would be interested in a Govan return.

Gattuso has been discussing his next move with representative and super agent Jorge Mendes.

It was the role of Mendes that reportedly cost the 43-year-old his last job after his contract with Fiorentina was rescinded just a couple of weeks after it was agreed due to a dispute between the player and the Florence club’s board over players he was planning to bring in.

Talks with Tottenham also broke down before condemned Nuno Espirito Santo took the reins in north London.

Gattuso had previously been in charge of Napoli where he won the Italian Cup and AC Milan where he became a hero after helping them to Champions League success twice - the second time against against Gerrard’s Liverpool.

A World Cup winner with Italy, he has already knocked back opportunities at Spartak Moscow and Serie A strugglers Salernitana, the latter of which he joined for £4 million from Rangers in 1998.

Gattuso’s wife Monica is from Glasgow and is one of the key reasons behind his desire to take over at Rangers as the family look to return to Scotland.

He moved to Rangers as a teenager from Perugia and became a huge fans favourite due to his combative style after breaking into the first team.

But the arrival of Dick Advocaat brought an end to his time at Ibrox as he was played out of position at right back.

Gattuso went on to become a serial San Siro winner and was capped 73 times for Azzurri before moving into management with spells at Sion, Palermo, OFI Crete and Pisa before the big guns of AC Milan and Napoli.
