Ringsend couple's joy as first Leap Year baby of 2020 born in Holles Street, Dublin

The first Leap Year baby of the year was born in Dublin today and he's a little dote.

Baby Jenson was born shortly after midnight this morning in the National Maternity Hospital on Holles Street.

The gorgeous little tot came into the world three weeks earlier than his due date.

The hospital said that both mammy and tot are doing well, posting on Twitter: "Huge congratulations to Nicole Elizabeth & Philip McKeown on the birth of baby Jenson who was born at 00.07am.

"Our first #LeapYear2020 baby! Both Mum and babydoing really well.

His parents, Ringsend couple Nicole Elizabeth McKeown and Philip Murphy said "couldn't be happier today" - now their four year old daughter Morvem now has a little brother.

Mum Nicole Elizabeth said: "We feel such happiness and gratefulness to have Jenson here three weeks early and for him to be the first leap year 2020 baby at The National Maternity Hospital is extra special, a memory we'll cherish forever."

She also thanked the "incredible staff" at Holles Street.

A leap year happens every four years and has 366 days instead of 365, with the extra day at the end of February. The odds of being born on February 29 is one in 1,461.

Babys born on this day are known as Leapsters or Leaplings and they account for less than 1% of the population. They usually celebrate their birthday on either February 28 or March 1.

Leap years exist to keep the calendar year in check with an the actual year - which is defined by the time it takes earth to orbit the sun.

That takes 365 days, five hours, 48 minutes and 46 seconds: or 365.24219 days, during which time our home planet has traveled 940 million km.
