Ring of steel for Donald Trump during his third UK visit as president

A ring of steel will be thrown around Donald Trump as he arrives in the UK today for a Nato summit.

Police will be on high alert after last week’s London Bridge attack, a counter terrorism expert said.

The US President and First Lady Melania Trump are expected to land at Stansted in Air Force One late tonight.

Helicopters will be overhead as Mr Trump travels in a motorcade of armoured vehicles to a Buckingham Palace reception tomorrow to mark the 70th anniversary of Nato.

On Wednesday, Mr Trump, Boris Johnson and other world leaders will gather for talks at the Grove Hotel in Chandler’s Cross near Watford.

Scotland Yard will today announce details of road closures to prevent demonstrators getting close to the motorcade tomorrow. A protest is planned outside the palace by NHS workers.

Former Detective Chief Inspector Chris Phillips, who headed the National Counter Terrorism Security Office, said today: “This will be a major security operation and they will always make sure nothing is missed. There are tried and tested plans for Trump visits.”

It is not known where Mr Trump will stay during his third UK visit as president. In 2018, he and Melania spent the night at Winfield House in Regent’s Park, the US Ambassador’s home.

Mr Trump brought about 1,000 people, including more than 150 secret service agents, for that trip. The three-day state visit this June cost the Met £3.5million.
