Riley's Fish Shack in Tynemouth named one of the UK's best beach restaurants

The popular Riley's Fish Shack based in Tynemouth has bagged yet another accolade.

The internationally renowned Condé Nast Traveller magazine has named it as one of the 12 best beach shack restaurants in the whole of the UK.

Other shacks on the list come from as far afield as Cornwall down south and the Hebrides up north in Scotland.

It describes how the husband-and-wife team behind it - Adam and Lucy Riley - "are passionate about sourcing, so here you’ll find seafood from Caley Fisheries, Blythe Fisheries and North Shields Market, famous Craster kippers for breakfast, beer from local breweries and hot chocolate from Tynemouth-based chocolatier Gareth James".

The magazine continues: "It’s set in the nook of King Edward’s Bay, where an exceptional seafood lunch should be taken in deckchairs on the sand with fire pits and views of the North Sea."

Riley’s Fish Shack is literally that, a shack on the beach put together out of two rusting shipping containers by Adam which opened for business in September, 2015

Its menu is based on whatever fish has been caught and landed that day all cooked within the confines of the compact shack.

It came to national prominence in 2016 after a review in the Observer by restaurant critic Jay Rayner who wrote: "Call off the search. Close down the web browser and put away the guide books. I have found the eating experience of the year."

Other favourable reviews from the likes of Tom Parker Bowles followed while it has also featured in the Channel 4 series Hidden Restaurants fronted by Michel Roux Jr.

In 2019 it was shortlisted in the ‘Off Map Destination’ category at the World Restaurant Awards.
