RIKEN research institute, in a joint development with Fujitsu Ltd., unveiled its next supercomputer Fugaku on Tuesday.
Supercomputer Fugaku is expected to excel in calculation speed by up to 100 times greater than its predecessor, the K supercomputer, which ended operation in August last year.
Full-scale installation is scheduled in fiscal 2021, but some of the nodes have already been in use since April to find potential treatments for the new coronavirus.
Fugaku is in a 3,000-square-meter computer room at the RIKEN Center for Computational Science in Chuo Ward, Kobe, the same location where the K supercomputer was installed. The room houses 432 two-meter tall racks that are 1.4 meters wide, weigh about 2 tons, and contain central processing units and other equipment.
