Rihanna returned to Barbados' Crop Over festival on August 3, joining the Grand Kadooment Day parade in an elaborate custom costume by Barbados-based designer Lauren Austin.
Appearing with her brother Rorrey Fenty's band, Aura, the singer stepped onto the parade route in a teal, jewel-covered ensemble finished with multicolored feathers, gold tassels and an ornate headpiece. The appearance marked her first time participating in the celebration since 2024.
While the scale of the costume reflected the exuberance of Grand Kadooment, its local origins gave Rihanna's latest festival look particular significance. Austin has created several of the star's Crop Over ensembles during a working relationship that stretches back to 2013.

Inside Rihanna's 2026 Crop Over Costume
A teal satin bra and coordinating bottoms formed the foundation of Rihanna's look. Decorative bands wrapped around her body, while gemstones, sequins and dangling gold tassels introduced layers of color and texture.
Pink, purple, blue and green embellishments stood out against the cooler teal base, creating a kaleidoscopic effect across the costume.

The designer has worked with Rihanna on Crop Over costumes since 2013. In a 2017 interview with Vogue, Austin said she met the singer through Rorrey Fenty and Matthew Ashby after already spending several years creating costumes for the festival.
"I love how daring Rihanna is," Austin said at the time. "Her style is edgy and she isn't afraid to wear whatever she wants, when she wants."
That creative relationship produced one of Rihanna's most memorable Crop Over appearances in 2017, when she wore a crystal-covered Austin costume with vivid blue hair and multicolored feathered wings.
Austin has not designed every outfit Rihanna has worn to the festival. In 2019, the singer changed direction with a custom pink feathered minidress by Dutch designer David Laport. She returned to Austin for her 2024 appearance, however, wearing another dramatic costume featuring jewels, a decorative headpiece and sweeping plumes.

Crop Over traces its history to Barbados' sugar-cane harvest celebrations in the 18th century. The modern festival encompasses weeks of music, parties and cultural events before concluding with Grand Kadooment, when masquerade bands wearing elaborate costumes move through the streets.
Fashion and performance are inseparable from the celebration, making Rihanna's decision to work with a designer based on the island more meaningful than an ordinary celebrity endorsement.
Although her red-carpet wardrobe regularly features major international fashion houses, Rihanna has repeatedly used Crop Over to highlight Caribbean creativity.
