Grammy-award winning singer Rihanna has hit out at reports of US agents firing tear gas at migrants, hailing it as “terrorism”.

The US singer’s comments come a day after agents fired at migrants who tried to breach a fence separating the US and Mexico, on Sunday.

The firing took place after a group of people rushed towards the border fencing.

US President Donald Trump had raised alarms about the caravan of migrants as it approached the United States, and deployed military forces to the border to support the Border Patrol.

He has since told migrants to return to the country they are from.

Rihanna, real name Robyn Fenty, posted a screengrab of a journalist’s tweet about the incident.

Reposting Chris Sherman’s tweet, the pop star simply wrote “terrorism”.

Mexico's Milenio TV on Sunday showed images of at least a few of the hundreds of migrants at the border trying to jump over the fence separating the two countries.

The migrants carried hand-painted American and Honduran flags and chanted: "We are not criminals! We are international workers!"

Mr Trump said Mexico should send Central American migrants seeking asylum in the US back to their home countries.

Mr Trump said the migrants should not easily enter the country and has since threatened to shut down the U.S.-Mexico border, which stretches 2,000 miles.

Although Sunday's incident took place at a part of the border where there is already a physical barrier, Mr Trump has also urged Congress to fund his long-promised border wall.

He tweeted: "Mexico should move the flag-waving Migrants, many of whom are stone cold criminals, back to their countries.

“Do it by plane, do it by bus, do it anyway you want, but they are NOT coming into the U.S.A. We will close the Border permanently if need be. Congress, fund the WALL!"

Mexican government officials has no immediate response.
