Riding school owner prosecuted after child falls from horse

The owner of a local horse riding school has been fined after officers from the council discovered it they had been taking paid lessons without the license to do so.

Officers from Wirral Council 's environmental health team were called in to investigate an incident at Larton Riding School, Frankby. They were visiting the school after being notified of an incident involving a child falling from a horse during a paid riding lesson on Thursday, July 22 2021.

It soon came to light that the school was hiring out horses despite not having the relevant licence to do so. Officers found evidence horses were being hired out for both riding and instruction without the relevant license from Thursday, July 1 to Friday, July 23 2021, and on Tuesday, September 14 2021.

Following the investigation Karen Shaw, owner of the Larton Riding School, pleaded guilty to offences under the Animal Welfare Act 2006. The offences related to the activity of hiring out horses for riding and instruction without the required licence in place.

She was fined £250, with the council being awarded £1,000 in costs and a £34 victim surcharge.
