'Ridiculously overpriced' soup in southside cafe leaves Dubliners shocked

Dubliners have reacted to a "ridiculously overpriced' French onion soup for sale in a southside cafe.

The soup was on offer for in the popular South Dublin cafe €9.50. Alternatively, customers could opt for a croque monsieur for a steep €14.

The bill for soup, croque monsieur, fries and a latte would set you back €32 with a further €3.20 service charge. While many were quick to slam the crazy prices, others argued that Dublin establishments have been forced to raise their prices to pay staff, heating and bills.

More than five popular food spots and pubs have closed in the last few weeks, having not been able to keep up with rising costs.

With growing fears about the cost of living crisis this winter, some social media users have decided to stick to bacon and cabbage at home from here on out.

One person said: "Jaysus I'd stick to bacon and cabbage."

Another commented: "Food is becoming ridiculously overpriced in the city. Many of them will fold. People getting tired of poor quality for the prices. Rip off will end in their demise!"

A third wrote: "I would be more concerned at the toasted ham and cheese coming in at 14 bucks."

Others pointed out that eating out is usually a treat and that businesses are just trying to keep their heads above water.

One said: "They have to pay staff, insurance and now extortionate electric charges every food outlet, and other businesses will have to hike everything just to pay their bills."

Another added: "They're probably charging those prices so they can pay their staff a proper wage. Its peoples reaction to prices like this that are keeping chefs wages down low. If you don’t wanna pay for someone skilled to make it, stay at home and try make it yourself."
