Ridiculous statistics to show how painful Liverpool's defeat at Arsenal is to take

Liverpool's dominance against Arsenal at the Emirates was reflected in a series of ridiculous statistics as despite taking the lead they still somehow managed to lose the game.

Sadio Mane fired the Premier League champions ahead on 20 minutes but Alexandre Lacazette levelled proceedings 12 minutes later as he took advantage of a slack back pass from Virgil van Dijk.

To make matters worse for the Reds, a poor clearance from goalkeeper Alisson just before half-time enabled Reiss Nelson to hit the winner for the Gunners.

Although the scoreline is the only statistic that ultimately matters in any football match, the story of how proceedings went in general is spelt out in stark fashion by some of the other numbers crunched from the action.

Andrew Beasley pointed out that Arsenal were heading to victory without creating a single chance of their own throughout the 90 minutes although they would finally fashion an opportunity of their own in the final moments.

The hosts’ football was hardly in the free-flowing manner that Mikel Arteta would have wished as Squawka pointed out that Arsenal completed just 24 passes in the opening 25 minutes of the first half.

Even by the end when the three points were in the bag, Opta Joe observed that since the 2003/04 season when records began, Arsenal had the fewest shots (3) of any side victorious in a Premier League match.

It was also the largest difference in shots taken and faced – 3 to 24 – in an Arsenal win over this period.
