'Ridiculous' - Piers Morgan hits out after only 50 fans able to attend Welsh rugby match but further 140 watch from inside clubhouse

Piers Morgan has labelled the Welsh Government's new Covid-19 strategy for sports events as 'ridiculous' after what happened at Caerphilly RFC's Boxing Day fixture.

Our story of how 50 fans attended the game outside at Virginia Park, with a further 140 people watching indoors from the clubhouse, was picked up by other media outlets.

And TV personality Piers himself jumped on the bandwagon.

He took to social media to say 'Ridiculous' after learning of events at Caerphilly's under-30s versus over-30s clash.

Piers' tweet had 2,000 likes and stirred a big debate, with many critical of Mark Drakeford's stance on outdoor gatherings and others fiercely defending the Welsh First Minister.

The Welsh rugby programme is historically the time of year when clubs get their biggest pay-day, but it was by and large wiped out. Clubs decided it was impractical to go ahead with matches as crowds of any significant size were prohibited under the Welsh Government's new restrictions.

The Welsh Government say matches must in effect be played behind closed doors for the time being to help control the spread of the new omicron variant.

A number of community clubs did decide to play, including Caerphilly. They stuck by the 50 crowd ruling around the pitch, but confirmed that lots more watched the action from inside the clubhouse.

Club chairman Gareth Ashman said. "When the restrictions on crowds were initially announced, we were wondering whether it was viable to go ahead, but we decided we just had to.

“Ironically, we recently had two security cameras fitted to cover the pitch. So we had the option of showing the game inside the club by streaming the footage from those cameras to the TVs inside.

“We were obviously limited on numbers, but we have got quite a large clubhouse, so we managed to get around 140 people inside, seated in tables of six."

This weekend's big rugby fixtures, Covid permitting, are due to be Scarlets versus Ospreys and Dragons against Cardiff. But they will have to go ahead without fans, denting much-needed pay-days for the Welsh regions.

Swansea City have a home Championship fixture scheduled against Fulham on Bank Holiday Monday, with no fans attending.

Ironically, Cardiff City supporters can travel in large numbers to away matches against Bournemouth on Thursday night, then West Brom on Sunday, even though the Welsh Government stance means fans are banned from Bluebirds home games in the Welsh capital.

Their Boxing Day clash with Coventry was called off anyway, but the Bluebirds meet Preston in the FA Cup at Cardiff City Stadium on Sunday week.
