'Ridiculous' - Nottingham Forest favourite slams £68k-a-week Championship madhouse

Nottingham Forest fan favourite Stan Collymore has slammed the way the Championship operates economically.

The former Red has blasted the finances on offer to second-tier clubs as the reality of the coronavirus starts to bite.

Covid-19 has suspended Forest's season with nine games remaining.

Sabri Lamouchi's side are a good bet to finish the campaign in the play-off spots, with the Reds currently in fifth place and five points clear of Bristol City in seventh.

If they do go up, they will join the elites in the top flight where the riches are vastly greater than what is on offer in the Championship.

But the second tier has become a division that pays well itself - but that is likely to even out after the pandemic finishes.

"With the Championship’s top earner on £68,000 a week, you realise just how ridiculous football is,” Collymore wrote in the Sunday People.

“Now we have players in League Two on £4,000 a week and driving Mercedes G Wagons and I find that extraordinary, given at least 95 per cent of players in that division, maybe even 98 or 99 per cent, will never play in the Premier League.

"If you paid someone that money at that level, you would expect them to be the next Jamie Vardy - but I bet he wasn’t on that when he was playing non-league with Fleetwood.

“No wonder the game is in such a mess – these are the economics of a madhouse.

"I’d love it, once this is over, if we can get common sense back and have a conversation where we can achieve some degree of fan control that allows supporters to have some say in how their clubs are run.
