A Gateshead man has been charged after he allegedly evaded police on a motorcycle over a patch of about 60km of the Hunter Region.
Police said the pursuit of the 26-year-old began at Telarah, with the rider fleeing through Rutherford, Ravensfield, Bishops Bridge, Sawyers Gully, Cessnock, Kearsley and Elrington - where the man allegedly threw his bag, which contained an extendible baton.
The incident ended with his arrest at New Lambton.
It started just before 10.30am when police attempted to stop a Kawasaki motorcycle near Maitland after checks revealed its registration had expired.
Officers pursued the man through several Coalfields towns and suburbs, before they stopped the chase near Cessnock and left it to the PolAir police helicopter to track the rider.
Police said he was allegedly travelling in a dangerous manner, crossing to the incorrect side of the road on several occasions, riding on bicycle paths, running red lights and speeding.
The motorcycle continued through Freeman's Waterhole, Toronto, Glendale, Wallsend, Elermore Vale and New Lambton where it entered a carpark on the John Hunter Hospital grounds.
Police swooped on the 26-year-old and arrested him.
They found that the man is on parole until October, 2021, and is disqualified from having a licence until 2024.
He was charged with five offences including police pursuit - drive dangerous second offence in five years (skyes law), drive whilst disqualified second offence in five years, possess prohibited weapon, use unregistered vehicle and use uninsured vehicle.
The man was refused bail at Newcastle Local Court on Thursday and will appear again on April 24.
