With Ride now back and touring, with a 25th anniversary edition of their debut album Nowhere out, we’ve got a clip of the band performing Taste, from the DVD that accompanies the album, for your shoegazing pleasure.
The show featured in the DVD took place at the Town and Country Club – now the Forum – in London in March 1991. It was filmed on two 16mm cameras and three Super 8 cameras, but there have been no plans to do anything with the footage until now.
James Deegan shot the four videos to promote the Today Forever EP in 1991, which were then edited earlier this year by Matt Levin, who also synced a specially mixed audio track of the performance.
“It was a very challenging edit,” Levin told The Active Listener. “First and foremost, there was no sync sound, or sync track to work with. Just silent film footage that had been transferred to video. Today with timecode and a sync track, it’s a breeze to sync audio, but I basically had to lip read the songs silently, figure out which songs they were, and then manually sync them up. It was very time consuming, but worth it in the end!”
