Rico Gathers, we hardly knew ye in Cleveland.
The Browns had an option with what to do with Gathers and the active roster, and they chose to end the relationship. Cleveland waived the tight end instead of activating him from the suspension list on Tuesday.
He was with the team for just one month, signing on August 11th. Gathers did little in his preseason audition but stayed with the Browns through final cuts because he was previously suspended by the NFL for violating the substance abuse policy. Because he was on the suspended list, the Browns remain at 53 players on the active roster.
The No. 2 TE position remains troubling for the Browns. Newcomer Demetrius Harris has not played well, and Pharaoh Brown appears one-dimensional. There was hope Gathers could help the situation, but the Browns didn’t see it and moved on.
